Environmental Conditions
Extra-ordinary Preconditions
Human lifestyles are greatly disconnected from nature; we, for example, insulate our bodies by wearing clothes and dwell inside the heated and shaded confines of houses, in effect, enabling human beings to live in primate hostile climates.
Supplements Extraordinary circumstances may call for particular attention and exceptional measures, wherefore many propose the use of artificial supplements to counteract the unnatural state of the modern human being. Supplements are however generally unnecessary and un-recommended, if we follow Sensible Lifestyle Regimen, since isolated substances are less compatible with a body shaped by evolution; a process unfolding solely, only, in conjunction with the assimilation of whole foods.
Vitamins
Nevertheless, certain vitamins might be necessary to supplement because of modern environmental realities.
Vitamin B12 deficiencies are caused by mineral depleted soils (cobalt), sterile modern environments (water supply), absence of minute amounts of insects and organic dirt in our diet, suboptimal pancreatic, adrenal and thyroid gland function, and the modern practice of employing antibiotics during infections; destroying unnecessary and necessary internal microbiotic lifeforms. In order to know whether we are deficient; we should have our B12 levels examined.
Korean nori-laver; a form of seaweed, is one of the most concentrated sources of bioavailable B12 found anywhere in the natural kingdom, for more information, see: Bioavailable Plant Sources of B12 In case we are subjected to prolonged spells without significant sunlight exposure, which is an unfortunate reality for most people living in cold climates; intake of a vitamin D supplement is wise, either in the form of an extract(1), mushrooms enriched with sunlight, or chlorella (2)1) look for supplemented extracts with as few ingredients (fillers) as possible.2) If possible, always check with the seller to see an analysis of the nutrient content, to know how much D vitamin a certain batch contains; about 0.6MG per 100g would be a decent amount, and if the batch contains that amount; an intake of 10g a day should be enough, but some people require much more, and some batches may contain more or less. If in doubt, and if possible, have your levels measured every winter. If we are sun deprived; undergoing treatments at a full spectrum tan-salon is preferable to supplementation, since such facilities closer mimic the nature of true sun exposure. If one consumes a large amounts of beta-carotene and lycopene rich fruits (watermelon, tomatoes, red and pink grapefruit, carrots, etc.) in advance; the skin should thereafter tan without traces of soreness, if one does not overdo the procedure. The treatment should optimally be performed once or twice a week, remember to consider your skin type prior to any sun exposure, artfical or otherwise. Trace MineralsWe will all do well by incorporating many wild herbs into our daily regimen, which will provide substantial quantities of additional micronutrients (trace minerals like zinc and selenium). Unsustainable modern farming practises have unfortunately lowered the overall quality of cultivated soils, hence wild crafted herbs offer a valuable, complementary, dietary strategy.
Wild herbs may be consumed in salads, as powders, teas and herbal infusions (decoctions in which herbs are simmered for a few hours in order to release their active principles. see: Herbal Infusions, for more information).
