Introduction

Chronic pain makes life miserable, joyless, unbearable, we hope we may help by highlighting a path to wellness.

The Causes

The prevalence of uric acid crystals in our tissues begets inflammation, often the inflammation concentrates in the joints (promoting arthritis).

Genetic factors can be involved in the development of gout, since low genetic expression of certain enzymes (in the purine salvage pathway) can lead to excessive amounts of uric acid, however, studies have shown that lifestyle determines the ramifications and particular manifestations of gout (6). Wherefore even a person genetically predisposed to contract the condition may avoid gout by following a thereto appropriate lifestyle.

Managing Gout

Resolving chronic gout requires long-standing reduction in serum uric acid.

So, how can we reduce uric acid levels?

An appropriate, where-to sufficient, lifestyle makeover is the optimal choice and can indeed lead to a significant reduction in uric acid load, whilst artificial pharmacological intervention with drugs such as NSAID, colchicine, corticosteroids, allopurinol are associated with unwanted effects; destroying mitochondrias; promoting decreased energy levels (12), hepatitis (20), allergic reactions, nephropathy (19) to name a few.

  • By sowing the seeds of a new lifestyle and cultivating the holistic principles; the harvest will be of remedy!
Fortunately, moreover, the solution is harmless and sustainable; mostly devoid of side-effects.

Lifestyle

Despite some disagreements, distinctions and nuances; acute flares of gout and chronic gouty arthritis arise from the same underlying cause: lifestyle choices promoting systemic acidosis.

Both conditions may however improve tremendously by adopting the following dietary regimen:

A low-protein, composed of colorful fruits and vegetables, plant centered diet.

The regimen prevents the formation of gout by alkalizing tissues, removing excess uric acid deposits, thereby reversing the degenerative gouty condition.

Advanced Regimen

Regenerating and Reversing Chronic Gout

A fruit based dietary regimen, combined with tissue specific herbs, followed for as long as necessary, designed to release chronic gout, will eventually ensure complete regeneration.

High water content fruits are an excellent antidote to hyperuricemia: l
emons, grapes, cherries, apples, watermelons and oranges are extremely powerful as anti-uricemia agents; dissolving crystals, increasing elimination, reducing serum levels, by working as alkalizers; neutralizing tissue acidity; decreasing inflammation. Fruits are moreover full of phytonutrients protecting against oxidative stress and inflammation (9, 10, 11, 12), whilst inhibiting excessive xanthine oxidase (XO) and cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) enzymatic activities* (2, 3), and lowering uric acid levels.

* Enzymes that contributes to the gouty condition when hyperactive.

Including tissue specific herbs during the healing process will significantly increase the efficacy of the proposed regimen, since herbs are likewise, and often in greatly concentrated quantities, loaded with powerful phytochemicals aiding the body during the elimination of acids and the regeneration of tissues.

Short Term measures

When treating acute, painful, flares it is wise to avoid the use of aspirin since this can increase uric acid levels and counteract the regeneration process, instead herbal painkillers such as Willow bark, from which aspirin is actually derived, are tremendously applicable; providing efficient, immediate and temporary remedy, without side effects (see section below for details).

Pain Reducing Recipes

  • Prepare a powerful infusion (30 grams of dried herbs), or procure a strong herbal tincture (at least 3 parts herb to one part alcohol), containing:

2 parts Willow bark (Salix spp.)

1 part Black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa)

1 part Nettles (Urtica dioica)

Consume 6 cups of this infusion daily, or in case of a tincture, 3       teaspoons 6 times a day mixed with juice or water, which will,         hopefully, provide significant relief.

External Approaches
  • Apply castor oil packs on inflamed area to alleviate pain (to make castor oil packs see: castor oil).
  • St. Johns Wort extracted in olive oil (red oil) applied on affected areas.
  • A mixture of the following essential oils; peppermint, lavender, marjoram, rosemary, clove and franckincense, diluted with a carrier oil, may likewise help reduce symptoms.
  • Aloe vera can be applied both internally and externally.

Useful tools to apply in addition to lifestyle change
  • Unrefined celtic sea salt baths can offer remedy: fill your bathtub with hot water and dissolve 2-3 kg or 4-6 pounds of salt in the tub. Put on some nice music and soak for as long as possible, several hours is preferable. Adding a natural source of so called "magnesium oil" will increase the efficaciousness of the treatment.

A Technical Perspective: Scientific References and Information

Deposits of uric acid crystals are associated with systemic acidosis (4), inflammation partially mediated by a harmful hyperactivity of inflammatory enzymes: xanthine oxidase (XO) and cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) (2, 3), and low activity of enzymes in the purine salvage pathway.
The enzyme XO catalyses the oxidation of hypoxanthine into xanthine, wherefrom uric acid is generated, therefore over-activity of XO causes the generation of detrimental concentrations of uric acid.

Foods high in purines, proteins and fats; such as animal flesh and dairy are significant upregulators of uric acid levels. Dairy contain high levels of XO, which is absorbed by the small intestine (14); exerting several malign roles; including contributing to the painful inflammatory response associated with gout. Furthermore, milk XO generates reactive oxidative species reducing cytochrome c, an important mitochondrial enzyme (13).

Fruits are loaded with benign phytochemicals exerting a powerful antioxidant capacity (9, 10, 11, 12), and modulating unbalanced enzyme activity; ameliorating excessive oxidative stress associated with XO enzyme performance (12). Fruit therefore inhibits excessive expression of the damage causing enzymes, whilst promoting an optimal cellular environment; reducing the proliferation of XO.
